滞在人数は夏季は4800人、冬季は1200人ということで、極限環境で頑張っている人がいるのは素晴らしいですね。冬季の内陸は補給もなく数か月貯蔵物資で耐える必要があるようです。

南極大陸の面積は1400万km2でオーストラリア大陸の2倍、ヨーロッパ大陸の1.3倍です。発見されたのは1820年です。最高点は4892mのVinson Massif山塊にあるMount Vinson(南緯 78°31’, 西経85°37’)ですが、その下に氷が3000mくらいあるそうです。想像を絶する氷の厚さですね。
Vinson Massifの現地の天気予報があるので驚いてしまいます。-45℃くらいと思ったより寒くないですね。ただし風速20～70km/h(秒速で6～20m/s）という強い風が吹いています。
