先週の学会で南極越冬隊の話を聞きました。越冬隊は30人程度で、昭和基地に滞在します（現在第67次。出発から期間まで1年2か月だそうです。）。昭和基地の位置は南緯69度で、オーロラが良く見える緯度だそうです。オゾンホール、CO2濃度、重力場の精密測定や生物調査をおこなっているそうです。

南極点にも基地があります。これは米国のアムンゼン・スコット基地(Amundsen-Scott)です。南極点に最初と2番目に到達した2つの探検隊の隊長の名前がついています。1956年設立です。50人程度が越冬するそうです。

南極点の基地は標高が2835mと高地で南極大陸の中心付近にあるため、気温は相当低いと思われます。今週は暑さを忘れるため、南極の基地についていろいろ調べてみましょう。最低気温は-82.8℃です。ドライアイス(-78℃)を保存できる温度ですね。
