なかなか明るい話題がないので、浮世離れした地球外生命体の話にしましょう。先週(4月17日)、ジメチルスルフィド(CH3-S-CH3)、ジメチルジスルフィド(CH3-S-S-CH3)が120光年離れた惑星(K2-18b)に大量に存在することが報告され話題になっています。

この著者（ケンブリッジ大 Institute of Astronomy）は、軽めの海王星型惑星(mini-Neptune, 地球質量の1～10倍程度)が地球型よりも幅広い条件で生命をはぐくむ可能性を2021年に提案していました。

120光年離れた海王星型惑星(K2-18b)をJames Webb宇宙望遠鏡を使って観測したところ、ジメチルジスルフィドが大気中に大量に含まれることがわかり、これは植物プランクトンなどが生産するので、生物が存在する証拠ではないか、と主張しています。
ジメチルスルフィドは生物が関与しなくてもできるはずであるという反論もあります。今年の2月18日出版です。
