金曜日の読書”The Consciousness Instinct:…”は第9章です。第8章で量子力学が巨視的な大きさをもつ生命に影響を与えているのが酵素の活性中心であり、その量子的揺らぎが遺伝子の突然変異につながっているという説が紹介されました。続く9章では、筆者が連続した泡に例えている意識の本質についていろいろな例を用いて説明しています。箇条書きしましょう。
・昔行われたてんかん(epilepsy)の治療で脳梁を切断した患者を調べたところ、左脳と右脳に分離した意識が2つあることがわかった。左脳の意識は話すことができて、完全に正常だと言っている。右脳の意識は、目で見たものを左手で指さすように指示すると従うため存在していると思われるが、左脳の意識はその行為を認識しない。
・左脳は因果律(causality)に伴う推測（inference）と言語を司っている。右脳は、感情と社会性を司っている。特に、周りの人の感情を推測する機能は右脳にあり常に自動的に働いている。自閉症(autism)の人はその機能が欠けていることがわかっている。
・実験の結果、自分を含む環境の空間把握を行っている限りにおいて、動物にも意識はあり、虫にも意識はある（一寸の虫のも五分の魂、と習う日本人には当たり前ですが）。
・外界や記憶に反応して湧き上がる泡のような意識に一体性を持たせているのが中脳（脳幹の最上部）が司る基礎的な感情である。
・泡のような意識のどれがはじけどれが残るか、すなわちどこに意識を向けるか、という制御を行う機能はある。例えばトンボ(dragonfly)が獲物を追尾して追いかける場合、どこを注視するかを選択しているのは1つの細胞であることがわかった。 ※ 注意(attention)の制御はAIの研究でも重要です。
