先週気になったニュースは、英国ケンブリッジ大学図書館のチーム(Cambrige Univ. Libarary’s Cultural Heritage Imaging Library) が2019年に発見された13世紀のアーサー王物語(the legend of King Arthur)の写本のテキストの復元に成功したというものです。

羊皮紙に書かれていて、荘園の税務記録の表紙に使われていたそうです。テキストの復元にはX線CTで折りたたまれ綴じられた羊皮紙の構造を調べ、
微小なカメラで折り目の部分を注意深く撮影したり、擦り切れた文字を可視光以外の画像を使って読み取ったりしたとのことです。経年劣化で脆くなっていたので現代の技術でなければ解読不可能だったとのことです。
特に魔法使いマーリン（Merlin）が登場する断片は少なく貴重とのことです。アーサー王物語は騎士道物語の一種で、Wales地方の伝説（5世紀末にサクソン人を撃退）から発展し1136年ごろにGeoffrey of Monmouthという司祭によりまとめられたフィクションを元にして西ヨーロッパに広がったものだそうです。写本の形で伝搬する際に写し手が物語を追加したり変更したりしたとのことで、写本の異同を調べる学会もあるようです。

今週はちょっと魔法使いマーリンの話に触れてから（魔法使いは好きなので）、羊皮紙やパピルスなど昔～未来の紙を説明しようと思います。
