金曜日の読書 ”The Consciousness Instinct:…”は今週は第2章です。ダーウィンまでの「意識」についての認識を取り上げています。デカルトは純粋な思考だけでしたが、人間の解剖が行えるようになり、William Pettyとその弟子のThomas Willis（1621-1675）の一派がいろいろな動物と人間の脳を比較して、嗅覚が優れている動物は臭球が大きいこと、逆に人間は記憶力が優れていて大脳が大きいことから、記憶力は大脳が担っているのではないか、という説を立てます。しかし、動物と人間の脳には本質的な差がないのに対し、思考能力は人間しか持っていないというところから、思考は脳と関係ないのではないかと考えました。デカルトの説が裏付けられたことになります。本書にもちょっと書いてありますが、これは正しくなく、今まさに我々が生成AIで見ているように100億パラメータ（ニューロンは1000個のシナプスを持っているので、100億÷1000=10万個のニューロン）によるネットワークが思考（に見えるもの）には必要である、というのが正しいと考えられます。しかし、Willisは、患者の観察と合わせて、脳は身体からの感覚を束ねて「魂 soul」に伝える器官であるため脳が壊れると精神に影響が及ぶと考えました。また、脳の異なる部分が異なる機能を持つと推察しました。この考えにより正しい道筋の精神医学が生まれたことは特筆すべきであると著者は評価しています。
次に高校でもならう哲学者のJohn Lockeは睡眠中に魂はどうなっているかを考え、睡眠中は思考はないが魂はあるはずなので、思考と魂は別であると結論しました。そして、意識とは各瞬間の自分の物語をつないでいる糊のようなものであり、それが自我(self)であると考えました。それからDavid HumeやArthur Schopenhauerによる潜在意識(subconscious mind)や意思(will)の導入が紹介されます。それからFrancisus Dongersの反応時間による認知プロセスの定量的測定という心理学実験(1868)とその発展が紹介されます。さらにFreud、Brentanoによる心理学の発展と並行してDarwinの進化論(1859)によって哲学が大きくゆすぶられたことが述べられ、「行動主義」が導入されて章が終わります。
Darwinのところを抜き出してみましょう。やっぱり偉大です。

purveyor 辞書は「食料の調達者、仕出し屋、御用達」ですが、ここは「人間の脳は何も書いていない黒板のようなもので、感覚情報を知識としてため込んでいるだけのものだとみなす人」という意味だと思います。
