昔の外国の慈善病院を調べたところ、いろいろあります。Wikipedia だとまとめは下記になりますが、日本の項には小石川養生所がなく、病院は西洋から輸入された、という記述です（確かに西洋医学による病院はは幕末のポンぺ（オランダ軍医）による長崎養生所(1861)からですが、病院（施薬院、悲田院）の記録はAD723、さらに聖徳太子が隋に習ってつくった(AD593)という説もあります。中国でも隋以降のようです）。

wikipediaは古代ギリシャから説き起こしています。ギリシャでは神殿が病院の役割をしていました。ローマは公衆の病院がなく、AD4世紀末のビザンチン帝国による病院設立が最初のようです。英国ロンドンのSt Bartholomew’s Hospital (AD1123年)が現代の病院に似た最初の施設とされていて、今も稼働しています。

英国のストーンヘンジ(BC2500-2000)も「石の魔力」（古代人がそう思っていた？）を使う療養施設ではないか、という説があります（下記は2006年の新聞の記事）。BC2300の裕福な怪我人とその従者の埋葬が見つかったという記事です。薬がなくても、温かくして寝ていて食事が出るならば回復には役立つでしょう。wikipediaには病院説は書いてありません。
