Wageningen はオランダの内陸部にあります。鉄道は近くを通っているようですが、大都市からは遠いです。大学と研究所の町です。Food Valleyという産学官の農業・食品研究機関の集積地ができていますが、なぜこの立地なのか気になります。ちなみに、ingenという語尾はオランダの地名にたくさんありますが、「○○族に向かう/ともにある（土地）」という意味だそうです。

によると、1876年に国立農学校ができてそれが次第に整備されたようです。小さい国なので、1か所に集中したのがよかったのだと思います。現在では学士～博士までを教育する大学と、国立の環境研究所、経済研究所、獣医学研究所、技術革新研究所(Center for Development Innovation)、食品研究所、水産研究所、植物研究所、酪農研究所などが集まっています。
日本も北海道（十勝）、静岡、熊本等にFood Valleyを作る構想がありますが、まだ準備段階です。日本の面積はオランダの9倍(37.5万km2:4万km2)、人口は7倍(1.24億:0.179億)なので、Food Valleyは1つ以上あってもいいかもしれませんが、1か所に集中したほうが限られた予算・企業を分散させるよりも効果があるでしょうね。それがわかっていても綱引きがあり簡単ではないと思います。
オランダの農業輸出は米国の次で2位、という記事があります。Wageningen Univ. & Researchも登場しますが、それだけでなく、北部の港町にあるEnzi Zadenなど様々な企業で育種や植物工場の研究がおこなわれている様子が紹介されています。 2000年になってから発展したようです。
