金曜日の読書”Hillbilly Elegy”は第8～9章、高校２～４年生（日本の高校１～３年に対応）に母と別れ祖母と暮らすようになって生活が立て直されるところです。一人暮らしの年老いた祖母の邪魔をするのを恐れて母のパートナーが変わるたびに一緒に転居を繰り返していましたが、高校の近くの祖母の家に短期滞在中、母が看護師協会の抜き打ちドラッグ検査で尿を提出する必要があるので代わりになって欲しいと頼みに来て危機的状況が祖母に発覚しました。そこから祖母と一緒に暮らすようになり成績も向上し、祖母の勧めで近所のスーパーでレジ打ちのアルバイトをするようになって、経済的階層の存在や福祉を悪用する貧困者がいることに気づきます。アパラチアや南部が「小さな政府」の共和党支持なのは福祉を悪用する貧困者を嫌うためだと分析しています。工場が国外に移転して安定して働く場所が無くなることにより、コミュニティが自立や勤勉から、見栄のための無理な消費とそれによる貧困、孤立・怒り・不信感などに支配されていく様子を肌で感じるようになり、また祖父母と母からその両方を自分で体験して、将来政治を目指す動機をつかんだようです。祖母と暮らして最近の言葉でいう「心理的安全」な環境を得られたことを「幸せだった」と回想しています。面白いエピソードがたくさんちりばめられていますが、よく見るとコミュニティの状況を理解させるようにきちんと構成されています。文体も口語調で参考になります。

transitioned 態度をコロっと変えた、くらいでしょうか。動詞で使うこともあるのですね。

the last straw 最後の藁しべ、もう限界。It’s the last straw that breaks the camel’s back. 訳すと、「たとえ最後に載せるのが藁1本でも、限度を超えればラクダの背骨が折れる」つまり「たとえ少しでも限界を超えると取り返しのつかないことになる」ということ。https://oggi.jp/6751357
