Hillbilly Elegy(5)：苦難の少年時代

金曜日の読書　“Hillbilly Elegy”は5～7章、著者が苦難の少年時代を送るところです。著者は母親の二番目の結婚でできた子供で、一番目の結婚でできた姉(half sister)と母と一緒に暮らしたり、一時期は実の父親のところに長期滞在したりしています。周囲の大人は気性が激しくすぐに夫婦間のけんかがエスカレートして離婚になるようです。算数を教えてくれた祖父が無くなると母親は薬物依存になってしまいます。
母親は、高校卒業時には成績優秀者に選ばれましたが、卒業後すぐ結婚→離婚からパートナーが長続きせず、看護師資格を取って暮らしていました。著者は母親の激怒から逃げ出し警察沙汰になったこともあります。そのとき母親と同じ裁判所にいた被告たちに親近感を抱いたのは彼らも移住したヒルビリーだったから、という回想です。著者は祖父母のほかにも周囲の誇り高きヒルビリーの人たちの影響、実の父親の福音派キリスト教（進化論を否定）の影響、母親の依存症リハビリ施設での家族向けグループ活動（ディスカッション）の影響などを受けて人格が形成されていることがわかります。要約は難しいですが、依存症リハビリ施設にいる人は黒人かアパラチア出身の白人が多い、という分析が印象的です。
英語で見ていきましょう。
