金曜日の読書 “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis”はいわゆる”rust belt”の白人貧困層の話です。米国の伝統的な価値観、年少者の教育で何が重要か、さらに「仕事がない地域に取り残されること」の影響、といった興味深いテーマについて考察することができます。15章構成で、著者（執筆時32才）の経験が書いてあります。
第1章は、アパラチア山脈周辺に住み着いた白人集落(Kentucky州Jackson町、人口6000人）が舞台です。アパラチア山脈は地理で習いましたが、カナダ東部から米国南東部に広がる2400kmの大山脈です。最高峰は2037mで、丘陵と渓谷に富んだ地形で、大規模農業は難しいです。
Appalachian Trailという全長2000マイルに及ぶ自然歩道が整備されているそうです。行ったことがないですが、楽しそうですね。熊などはいないのでしょうか。

第1章に出てくる山地の住民（Hillbilly）は誇り高く、侮辱した相手を気絶するまで殴りつけたり、子供のときに牛泥棒をピストルで撃ったりします（著者の祖母）。自衛の精神が骨の髄までしみこんでいるようです。その極端さは何かをまもるため、正義のためだという解釈です。しかし、子供を見捨てたり妻を裏切ったりした人の話も出てきます。
山地の住民は貧しく、食事が十分でない近所の子供たちの話も紹介されます。また、現代では公立学校は荒れ放題で、違法薬物に依存する人も後を絶たないそうです。近代的な産業がないため、1950年代に工場のある街に移住した人々も多く、著者の祖父母もオハイオ州の工場町に移住しており、著者は祖母が戻って住む山地に里帰りしてHillbillyとしてのアイデンティを培います。
アパラチア山脈では炭田と鉄鉱石がとれるため、水利がよい場所に製鉄業が起っていました。しかし、1980年代にグローバル化のために製鉄所が立ち行かなくなり川崎製鉄と合併し、さらに廃業してしまいます（第4章で後述）。
