今週のドン・キホーテ： 公爵夫妻は家来と一緒に演劇仕立ての物語を作ってドン・キホーテとサンチョパンサに冒険をさせます。昼夜に渡って何十人もがかかわり、魔法使い、悪魔、空飛ぶ木馬を持った野蛮人の集団、呪いでひげが生えた侍女などが登場します。二人は目隠しをして木馬に載せられ、ふいごであおがれて空を飛んでいる気分になっている最中に仕掛けられた爆竹が爆発して冒険劇が終わります。すべては勇敢な遍歴の騎士とその部下の活躍で解決した、という手紙が降ってきます。
「それは公爵と夫人に、一生の間の笑い種を与え、サンチョには、長生きしても生涯話すべき内容を与えた」とあります。面白いですが、人が悪いですね。公爵は部下から、サンチョパンサが島を治めるのは無理だから、村に「島」という名前を付けてその総督に任命したほうがよい、と言われてそうします。
総督になるサンチョに出発前に与えたドン・キホーテの長い訓戒が面白いです。英語で見てみましょう。

err アー 誤る To err is human, to forgive divine. 人は過ちを犯し、神は許す。
“Second, you must look at who you are and make an effort to know yourself, which is the most difficult knowledge one can imagine. When you know yourself, you will not puff yourself up like the frog who wanted to be the equal of ox,..”
puff … up 膨らませる “puff” はマシュマロの形容にも使われます。
the frog… ox はイソップ物語でしょう。
“who are not of noble origin should bring to the gravity of the position they hold a gentle mildness which, guided by prudence, may save them from the malicious gossip that no station in life can escape.”
