今週は低温型の燃料電池について調べたいと思います。最初の燃料電池は、英国のSir William Robert Groveが1842年(天保13年)に発明しています。

それから実用的には顧みられなかったようですが、約100年後の1932年にケンブリッジ大学の技術職員のFransis Thomas Baconが実用化しました(Bacon cell)。この人は哲学者のFransis Baconの一族です。さらにさかのぼって哲学者Roger Bacon（1214-94）の子孫の可能性もあるそうです。

水素や炭化水素、アルコール等の燃料からエネルギーを取り出す小型の装置として有効で、エネルギー密度としてはリチウムイオン電池などの二次電池を1桁以上凌駕します。

この特性から、アポロ計画など宇宙用途で使われました。
燃料と酸素が連続的に触媒と接触し、電荷を分離しつつ外部回路に供給する必要があるため、ナノスケールの構造体が必須で、改良の余地はあります。そのため、世界中に燃料電池の研究所があります。
日本ですと、山梨大、九州大、電通大をはじめとしてたくさんあります。研究室レベルでは一定規模以上の理工系大学には研究室があるといってよいのではないでしょうか。
触媒部分だけを使ったものがハクキンカイロで、1920年に発明され、同じ会社が作っているのは驚きます(「天職は一筋がよし」、という方針だそうです)。
youtubeのコメントを見ると耐用年数は数十年単位のようです。触媒の被毒の問題がどうなっているか興味があります。
