ドン・キホーテは当てのない旅をしています。旅をする物語はエピソードを好きなように配列できるメリットがあり、水戸黄門の時代劇のように無限に続けることも、フリーレンの漫画のように緊密に構成することもできます。
後編では、ライオンとの冒険、富農の家での歓待、貧乏な羊飼いが策略で幼馴染と結婚する話、深い竪穴の洞窟に命綱をつけながら降りて幻覚を見る話、詐欺師の人形遣いの話、漁師の小舟に勝手に乗って水車に突っ込みそうになる話、ロバの鳴き真似をめぐり村同士が争う話（ドン・キホーテが仲裁しようとするが追い払われる）など、細部に味はありますが脈絡がない話が続きます。
その後、鷹狩をしている公爵夫人と出くわすことで話が大きく進みます。この夫人と公爵はドン・キホーテ前編の愛読者という設定になっています。
