今週のドン・キホーテは、後編のあらすじをたどっていきましょう。前編はドン・キホーテの狂気ぶりが強調されていて読むのが気の毒になるくらいひどい目にあいますが、後編は安心して読めます。作家の円熟のなせる技でしょうか。
出発後、想い姫ドルシネアの村に行き、サンチョ・パンサに姫の館を探すように言いますが、見つからないので通りすがりの田舎娘が想い姫の魔法にかかった姿だ、といってドン・キホーテをだまします。その後、旅芸人の馬車と遭遇し、道化にからかわれて戦いを挑みますが芸人たちが石つぶてを持って待ち構える中、サンチョ・パンサに説得されて戦いを辞めて踵を返します。その後、「鏡の騎士」と遭遇して負けたほうが言うことを聞くこと、という条件で決闘になります。
鏡の騎士は弱く、あっけなく勝利します。鎧の面を外させると、先週出てきたサンソン・カラスコであることが判明しますが、それはドン・キホーテに遍歴を辞めさせるための策略が自分が弱すぎて失敗したものでした。
続いてオランダからスペイン国王に献上されるライオンとの勝負を挑みます。運送する馬車の御者を強要して檻の扉を開けさせますが、ライオンは旅の疲れの為か檻から出ず丸まって寝てしまい、ドン・キホーテの大勝利ということになります。
それを見ていた豪農「緑の該当の騎士」から家に招待されます。豪農の暮らしぶりも出てきて面白いです。
サンチョ・パンサがだんだん賢くなって気の利いたことを言うようになります。「賢い人（ドン・キホーテ）と一緒にいるからだ」と本人は説明しますが、これは今後の伏線です。
