SETI Institute のSETIは Search for ExtraTerrestorial Intelligence で、地球外文明の探索のことです。1984年に設立されたそうですが、その前から電波望遠鏡で地球外文明からの電波を探す研究は行われていました。
有名なのがWow! signalと呼ばれるもので1977年8月15日にオハイオ州立大学で観測された72秒間の強い電波信号です（電波バースト）。周波数1.4204556GHzで、水素由来の1.4203556GHzに比べて高いので、10km/sのドップラーシフト（地球に接近している）があると考えられています。
帯域幅は10kHzで、この幅の広さは中途半端で、天文現象（自然に発生するメーザーなど）では説明できないそうです。発見者がなぜこの周波数帯域を探していたかというと、地球外文明が他の文明に信号を送るならこの周波数が一番つかわれるだろう、という予測があったためだそうです。

それ以来この射手座の領域はずっとモニターされていますが、同様の現象は観測されていません。現在の観測は、恒星のデータベースをつかってピンポイントでWow! signalが来たと思われる方向の恒星を全部モニターしているそうです。
違う方向からの電波バーストはSETI Instituteをはじめとする機関によって最近もいろいろ観測されています。
