数週間前に宇宙からの電波に宇宙人の信号がないかを調べるプロジェクトがあるという話題にちょっと触れました。今週は宇宙からの電波について調べましょう。
子供の時にラジオをいじくりまわしていて短波帯にへんな周期的な信号（「ピリピリピリ」で音程が上がっていく）があって不思議に思っていました。この信号は受信機のせいなのか本当の電波だったのか、その疑問はまだ解けていませんが、これについても調べてみたいです。
今週の世界の研究所としては、SETI INSTITUTEをとりあげます。

を見ると、100人くらいの研究者が参加しています。専門がいろいろあって、Planetary Geology 惑星地理学、Astrobiology 宇宙生物学 など楽しい名前の分野もあります。
astrobiologyを専門とする職場があるのでしょうか？履歴書がのっているのでいくつか見たところ、Carl Sagan Institute of SETI, NASA Ames Lab.などですね。SETIの雇用と運営が寄付でまかなわれているとすればすごいです。
Qualcommの創業者がUSD200M （300億円）を寄付したというニュースがありました。貧困、疾病、環境対策も大切ですが、こういうのもいいですね。
