今週のドン・キホーテは、ドン・キホーテが発狂前に親しくしていた人たちについて見ていきましょう。家政婦と姪と一緒に住んでいたようで、傷ついて帰ってくるとまた一緒に暮らします。親しい友人としては、司祭（ペーロ・ペレス学士）、村の理髪師（ニコラス親方）がいます。ドン・キホーテは、騎士道物語を昼夜なく読みふけり、睡眠もとらなくなってから発狂したという話になっています。
先日紹介した高圧超伝導の研究不正で騒ぎを起こした人も夜中の2時や明け方の4時に学生にメールをしていたそうなので、睡眠不足は要注意ですね。自戒しましょう。本文では騎士道物語の姫や騎士の話が出るとドン・キホーテは膨大な知識を披露します。暗記しているのでしょう。我々も多くの知識をためこんでいていくらでも語ることができます。ドン・キホーテは科学と同等のリアリティを騎士道物語に感じていたとすると、奇行も納得でき、また身につまされるところでもあります。
さて、友人の司祭と理髪師はドン・キホーテと同年代で中年～老境に差し掛かるようです。本を読ませないように騎士道物語でいっぱいの書庫を封印して魔法使いの仕業としてドン・キホーテに納得させます。前編の最後では、道中で窮したドン・キホーテに魔法にかかったと納得させて檻に閉じ込めて牛車で連れ帰ります。
後編になると、サンソン・カラスコ(Sanson Carrasco)という若者(24才)が出てきます。この人は日本語では「サラマンカ大学の予科学士」とのことです。僧職資格の学士号をもらって村に帰省してきたときにサンチョ・パンサにドン・キホーテが本（前編）になってサンチョ・パンサも国内外で有名になっている話を伝えます。
1615年に12000部以上印刷され、外国語にも訳されたそうですから、大したものです。
サンチョ・パンサはカラスコをドン・キホーテに引き合わせ、話をしているうちにサンチョ・パンサがまた遍歴の旅に行こうと言い出します。ロシナンテがいななき、吉兆だ！ということで後編の出発になります。

前編が世に広まっていて、ドン・キホーテが旅で会う人がみんなドン・キホーテのことを知っているという設定は愉快です。また、直前に出た無許可の他の著者による続編はドン・キホーテを騙る偽物の道中記である、という設定で偽物との対決もあります。メタ創作の嚆矢と言えるでしょう。
英語は後編の３章の面白いやり取りです。
