今回から金曜日は「ドン・キホーテ」（Don Quixote） を英語で読んでいきます。皆さん概要は子供の時に読んででいると思いますが、スペインの田舎の郷士（土地と小作人を持った下級貴族）、40才、未婚、が騎士道小説を読みすぎて現実と物語の区別がつかなくなり、自ら騎士となって冒険に繰り出して周りを振り回しながら自分はたいてい痛い目にあう、というのを繰り返します。
改めて読んでみると、面倒を起こす一番の原因は、騎士道物語では城に泊まると無料だから、という理由で宿代を払わないことですね。最初の1週間の旅は一人＋馬のロシナンテで出かけますが旅の商隊といさかいを起こしてけがをして動けなくなります。通りかかった近所の人に助けられて戻ります。姪と友人たちが介抱して15日間説得しますが、その間に人の好い小作人サンチョパンサ（妻子あり）を「手柄にもらう島の太守にしてやる」と言って連れ出します。
多くのエピソードからできていますが、最初の方は人迷惑で無意味ないさかいを起こしてけがをしてばかりで、かわいそうです。有名な風車の場面も最初の方に出てきます。風車を巨人だとみなして馬に乗って槍で突撃し、回転する羽根に槍が振り回されて馬ごとふっとんでしまいます。英語で見てみましょう。
Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha は1605年の前編の題ですが、「奇想驚くべき郷士」「工夫に富んだ郷士」など邦訳がばらつきます。この違いを吟味するにはは古いスペイン語を調べないといけないのでしょう。英語だとingeneious （of a person）= clever, original, and inventiveです。

valorous 豪勇の =showing great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle
“Good fortune is guiding our affairs better than we could have desired, for there you see, friend Sancho Panza, thirty or more enormous giants with whom I intend to do battle and whose lives I intend to take, and with the spoils we shall begin to grow rich, for this is righteous warfare, and it is a great to service to God to remove so evil a breed from the face of the earth.”

his lady Dolcinea 想い姫ドルシネア 昔見てかわいいと思った近所の村の田舎娘の名前をDon Quixoteが改変して騎士道物語に出てくる「想い姫」にした
