今週から、金曜日は「ドン・キホーテ」（Don Quijote/Quixote） を英語で読んでいきます。もとは中世スペイン語（ホをxで書く）ですが、定番の英訳があるようなので使います。
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra(1547-1616)著、Edith Grossman訳(2003)です。セルバンテスはシェークスピアと同時代人で、二人は同じ年に亡くなっています。
ドン・キホーテは2部あり、前編が1605年、後編が1615年に刊行されています。後編は前編がベストセラーになったことが作中に登場する面白い構成になっています。訳本の解説によれば、後編が書かれたのは、10年たって無断で二次創作（他の作家による偽の続編）が出版されたためとのことです。

セルバンテスの逸話として、何で読んだか忘れましたが、こういうのがあります：
セルバンテスはドン・キホーテの前編を出した後も困窮していて（版権を安く売り渡してしまって印税が入らなかったため）、外国の要人がスペインの大臣に会ったときに、なぜ国としてセルバンテスの生活を援助しないのか？と問われた時の大臣の答：
「彼は貧困にあえいでいるときのほうが創造性が増すから」
ひどい話というべきか、本質をついているのか… それはお金が無かったら必死で働き、自分の得意技が小説なら頑張るでしょう。少子化により日本の大学が置かれている構造的状況と若干重なるようで、この逸話を読んだ時に名状しがたい感情で天を仰いだのを覚えています。

後編は偽物が出なければ書かれなかったかもしれません。誇りと対抗心とプレッシャーが作家を動かしたでしょうが、寿命も縮めたかもしれません（出版の翌年死去）。有名な前編に比べて後編は地味ですが面白く、後世の評価も高いです。
セルバンテスの実生活も「人類の天才によって作られたあらゆる書物の中で、最も偉大で、最ももの悲しい」」（ドストエフスキー）を地で行くものと言えるでしょう。
