今週は、米国サンフランシスコにあるスタートアップ企業のインキュベータ Y Combinator から始めてスタートアップ関連を解説します。

これは企業として存在しています。ちょっと変わった社名の由来は情報科学の不動点定理（以前紹介したHaskell Curryの定理）ではないかと思います。一人の有名なプログラマーが設立したそうです。

最近は、新技術や新しいビジネスモデルを用いて急速に大きくすることを目的とした会社は、ベンチャー企業とは言わずにスタートアップというそうです。
最近、半導体教育関係でいろいろな人に会っています。その中でこの会社を知り、興味を持ったので調べてみることにします。
採択された企業に資金を2000万円(=$125k)与えて、3か月指導をして起業のノウハウを伝授しているようです。これまで育てた企業はdropbox, airbnb, stripe, redditなど我々が使うものもあります。
年に2回の提案募集があり、世界中から1万社超の応募があり、24～40社が選ばれるようです。倍率250~400倍で、我々の予算申請（4～20倍）の比ではありません。何をどのように指導しているか知りたいです。テレビ番組の「マネーの虎」と違って技術系が主だと思いますが、経験者による指導という点では似ています。

sorted into 4 groups 4つのグループに分けられる sortは並び替え。機械的にわけるのではなく、起業の段階などを考えて分けている、という意味でしょう
an intimate setting within the larger batch 大きな集まりの中で密接な状態に置かれる setは数学の「集合」の意味もあります。またプログラム用語（設定する）でもあります。

retreat リト「リ」ート は普通は「退却」ですが、「静養先」「避難所」「潜伏場所」などの意味もあり、この場合はこちらでしょう。
