金曜日の読書「五輪書」は５つの「巻」からなっています。地、水、火、風、空です。（陰陽）五行説は中国古代の学説で万物は木、火、土、金、水の「元素」でできているというもので、「五輪書」の５つ巻の名前とは違います。なぜこの５つにしたのか、知りたいですね。地の巻に理由が書いてあります。
地の巻 まず兵法の地盤としての考え方を説明する。
水の巻 水にならって心を自在な形にすることの重要性と方法を説明する。
火の巻 戦い方を詳説する。
風の巻 「昔風」、「今風」、「家風」などの言葉からとった。世間の兵法・流派を説明する。
空の巻 最終的には道理にもとらわれず、自然と自由があって不思議な力でふさわしいタイミングで意識しないで攻撃して成功する、これが空の道である。
となっていて、深いです。
地の巻を数回にわけて見ていきます。自分の履歴を振り返り、それからこの本の叙述の仕方を、仏法、儒教、軍記、軍法など他の言葉を借りず自分の経験と判断に基づき、天道と観音菩薩への信仰を鏡として書き始める、と説明しています。
それから兵法とはなにか、武士は何を考えているか、農商工との違い、大将の心得、兵卒の心得を解説しています。どれも数行～文庫本1ページくらいですが、リズムがあり、上手い文章です。また、戦乱が終わって行政官になっていった江戸初期の武士の考え方がわかって興味深いです。

strategy ここは「兵法」の訳です。
although I had won, 前の節で、60回決闘して1回も負けなかったと書いてあります。
I continued to train… 兵法の原理を極めるために朝から晩まで訓練し探索した、というのは宗教的修行に似ていますね。20年間の修行ののち、50才で兵法を会得したとのこと。

兵法を応用することによってどのような芸事でも教師なしで独学で極められるようになった。これは一面の真理です。が、人それぞれ得手不得手はあり、到達点は違います。適切なタイミング（”動体視力”）が必要なこと、スポーツや勝負事では特にそうです。

a warrior 武士の訳です。 Samuraiで通じますが、わからなければ warrior class 武士階級、と説明します。

人生を渡るには４つの方法がある。士農工商である。

“Both a vassal and a soldier are similar to a carpenter. The latter sharpens his tools, makes other tools… If he learns to practice the techniques of woodworking and also learns how to draw up plans, he can later become a master.”

“A carpenter must always keep his mind attentive to the following things: The wood must not lose its shape, the joints must hold, he must plane well but avoid oversmoothing, the wood must not warp later on. If you study the way of strategy, it is necessary to examine attentively what I write here, down to the least detail.”
木は設計通りの形で、継ぎ手はしっかりつながっていて、表面はきれいに平らにすべきだが、平らに削りすぎると後で曲がる。兵法を学びたければここに書いてあることの細部までしっかり気を付けるべきである。
