Telluride村は1878年に作られたそうです。名前の由来は、同じコロラド州で発見された gold telluride (AuTe2)鉱物だそうです。

金も出たそうですが(1875年発見)、AuTe2はここからは産出されませんでした。亜鉛、鉛、銅、銀がとれたそうです。現在はスキーリゾートです。最初のリフトは1972年に建設されたので、比較的新しいですね。

ゴールドラッシュは、1948-1855年の第一次から、何回かにわたって起こりました。動機としては現在のビットコイン騒ぎに相当すると思いますが、実際に大変な距離を旅してかなりの確率で命を失う無法地帯に出かけるので、参加したのは勇気がある人たちだったと思います。
数十万人が米国東海岸の入植地だけでなく、中国や中南米から集まって、西部地方（特にカリフォルニア州）の開拓が進みました。第一次ゴールドラッシュで得られた金は当時のお金で5.83億ドル、現在の日本円にして7兆円程度と考えられます。
詳しいことは明日説明します。35万人で7兆円を割ると一人平均2000万円になりますね。
