金曜日の「知識創造企業」4回目は3章前半です。暗黙知から形式知して新しい価値(製品、しくみなど)を創造するにはどうしたらよいか、を説明しています。
(1)暗黙知の共同化 (2) 暗黙知から形式知への表出 (3) 形式知の連結 (4) 形式知の内面化により個々人の暗黙知へ
という４段階をスパイラル状に経由して知識が進化していくというモデルです。色々実例が上がっていて、(1)では、開発合宿が重要で、コピー機のドラムカートリッジの開発合宿でビール缶を見てひらめいたとか、(2)ではパナソニックのパン焼き機では開発者が有名ホテルのパン屋に弟子入りして苦労の末、パンをこねるときの「ひねり」の重要性に気づいたとか、のエピソードが印象的でした。(3)ではトップの指示はあいまいなほうがよいが、具体化する中間管理職の役割が重要、(4)では開発経験を文書として記録してメンバーが見直すことが重要、と言っています。
いくつか面白い文章があるので英語で見ていきましょう。
”These examples within Japanese firms clearly show the effectiveness of the use of metaphor and analogy in creating and elaborating a concept… “much of what Michael Planyi has called ‘tacit knowledge’ is expressible – in sofar as it is expressible at all – metaphor”. Metaphor is a way of perceiving or intuitively understanding one thing by imaging another thing symbolically…. Moreover, metaphor is an important tool for creating a network of new concepts.”
たとえ話を使うのが暗黙知を形式知に表出するのに有効だと言っています。これは私も講義や研究で意識的に多用しているので、納得できます。Michel Polanyi(1891-1975)という学者が「暗黙知」という言葉を作ってこういう分析をしたとのことです。この人は化学者で、化学反応におけるポテンシャル曲面の概念を提唱してノーベル賞候補になっていましたが、50才の時突然化学をやめて哲学者になったそうです。面白いことに、息子のJohn Polanyiが後を継いで（？）反応中の赤外発光（化学発光の一種）を利用した化学反応動力学で1986年のノーベル化学賞を受賞しています。

たとえ話と暗黙知の間の齟齬（そご）を意識すると共通点が見えてきてアナロジー（類似点を用いたたとえ）になる。これも納得です。
