今週と来週は宇宙の話をしようと思います。今週の世界の研究所は、NASAが中心となって建設した James Webb 宇宙望遠鏡(JWST)です。運営はNASAと欧州宇宙機構(ESA)と共同だそうです。

James E. Webb氏は、アポロ計画の時のNASAの長官(第2代)だそうです。行政官の名前がついているのは興味深いですね。
名前については、運用前に天文学者の一部が反対したり、いろいろ議論があったみたいです。

ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡(2021-)は、ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡(1990-)の後継のように見えますがハッブルの話を最近聞かないなと思っていたら、2021年にメインコンピュータが故障したそうです。

ウエッブ宇宙望遠鏡は赤外線に特化しているようですが、それは、ビッグバンの後に生まれた最初の星の光が赤方偏移のため赤外線領域にあるはずだと考えられているためです。
最近、惑星形成に関する観測結果のニュースがありました。個人的には、ひし形の台に衛星放送のアンテナが乗ったような奇妙な形状の理由や赤外線検出のハードウェアに興味があり、調べてみたいと思います。
