金曜日の読書の西行（さいぎょう）の解説書は晩年に差し掛かります。本文は来週にして、今週は本の後半の和歌の翻訳で秋に関するものを選んでみます。
秋、ものへまかりける道にて
こころなき 身にも哀（あは）れは 知られけり 鴫立沢（しぎたつさわ）の 秋の夕暮れ
（これは傑作として古来評価が高く、「三夕（さんせき）の歌」の一つとして知られています）
I thought I was free / of passions, so this melancholy
comes as a surprise: / a woodcock shoots up from marsh
where autumn’s twilight falls.
神奈川の大磯で874年前に詠まれた歌で、場所が特定されています。昔から多くの人の心の琴線に触れた、日本人の原風景と言ってもいいでしょう。いろいろ解説があります。例えば下記。

無常の心を： きりきりすの枕近くに鳴き侍（はべ）りしに
そのをりの よもぎがもとの 枕にも かくこそ 虫の 音（ね）にはむつれめ
At a point in time when I was feeling desolate, I heard the voice of a ciricket very close to my pillow:
At that turning point, / with my head for the last time /
pillowed in sagebrush, / I’d have this chirping insect
still be what’s closest to me.
desolate 無人の、寂しい
月前無常を
月を見て いづれの年の秋までか この世に我が ちぎりあるらむ
That moon up there: / how many more autumn will
I be here to see it?
Something long ago fixed for / this life by an earlier one.
つくづくと ものをおもいに うちそえて をり哀れなる 鐘の音かな
In deep reverie / on how time buffets all
I hear blows fall / on a temple bell …drawing out more
of its sound and my sadness.
reverie は物思い、白昼夢、です。 a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts, a daydream
述懐の心を
たのもしな 宵暁の 鐘の音 もの思う罪も 突きざらめやは
Bonding so reliably – / the temple bell heard at dusk
sounds again at dawn … so
will the sins of this whole night
fall from me through its force?
よしさらば 涙の池に 身をなして 心のままに 月を宿らん
It will be good: / my body may cry itself into / a pond of tears,
but in it my unchanged heart / will give lodging to the moon.
※西行にならって月を見ながらいろいろ考えるのは、忙しい現代で自分の位置を確かめるのにいいと思います。
