arm社はトランジスタ30000個でできた32bitCPUの設計が携帯機器で広く使われることにより超優良企業になりました。30000個は驚くほど少ないという印象です。
現在のライバルと考えられているのは、UCBerkleyが発表したオープンソースRISC-V (Vはfive)です。これはライセンス料が無いので製品は安く作れますが、開発の動機づけが強くないため、超高性能を示す設計ができるとは考えにくいです。したがって、armの安価な古いプロセッサを置き換えるのではないかと考えらています。

一般に、大規模なopen source無料化はボランティアによる美談ではなく、ライバルつぶしのために上流か下流に異なる製品を持つ同業者が開発者に資金を与えて仕掛けるものと理解していますが、この場合は誰が出資しているのでしょうか。市場の支配権をライバルに与えないことが狙いです。

RISC-Vの開発の当初は米国国防省傘下のDARPAが出資したそうです。いろいろ考えを巡らせると面白いと思います。
