古いSFですが、小松左京の「復活の日」(1964)というのがありました。似たような小説（SFというよりホラー）にStephen KingのThe Standというのがあります(1978)。どちらも映画・テレビシリーズになっていますが、設定は似ており、突然現れた病原体で人類がごく少数まで減り、滅亡の縁にたたされるという話です（小説としては全く違う、それぞれの作家らしい話になっています）。先週のScience誌に、人類の祖先が90万年前に1200人まで減少して絶滅の縁にいたという論文が出ました。これは現代人の遺伝子解析から家系図のモデルを立てるというデータサイエンスの手法を駆使して導いたようです。中国とイタリアの共同研究ですが、今週の世界の研究所は、（おそらく）主導的な役割を果たした中国科学院とドイツ・マックスプランクが作った計算生物学共同研究所(CAS-MPG Partner Institute of Computational Biology, 上海）を取り上げます。研究所本体のwebは中国語版も英語版も2020年以降更新がないみたいです。

データサイエンスの良い例になっていると思うので、今週はこの論文がどういう解析をしたか、ちょっと突っ込んでみてみたいと思います。
英語は https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_King から。この人は多作で、私も若い時に英語の勉強のために何冊か読みましたが、怖くて寝られなくなって困ったことがあります(The Standも怖かった)。「テレビや新聞を見る？そんなことでは作家にはなれないよ」という名文句が印象に残っています。
