今週の世界の研究所は、Univ. Chicago, Enrico Fermi Institute をとりあげます。
FermiLabというのもありますが、別物です。それはまたの機会に。
シカゴ大フェルミ研究所は教授35人を擁する研究所で、名簿には院生や技術職員も載っています。院生に比べて先生が非常に多いです。

下記が研究分野ですが、加速器、宇宙線、重力、高エネルギー物理、ニュートリノ物理などに加えて、Geophysics（地球物理）というのがあり、ちょっと毛色が違ってなぜだろうと思います。これはおそらくここが原子核の放射壊変を使った年代決定法の発祥の地だからでしょう。

金曜日の読書で時間について考えていますが、放射性原子核の半減期が時間を測る一つの普遍的な方法です。実用的によく使われるのが炭素14(半減期5760年)ですが、この方法はInstitute for Nuclear Research (現 Enrico Fermi Institute)で1940年代にWillard F. Libby 教授によって発明されました（1960年にノーベル賞）。
解説の動画があります。最初はトリチウムによる年代測定を考えたようで、炭素14が発見されて転用したようです。実に素晴らしい着想ですね。

14Cの半減期は5730±30年とのことで、3桁しかわかっていないのは意外でした。これ以上の精度はいらないのだと思いますが、精度が出ない本質的な理由があるのかもしれません。
