今週の世界の研究所は、先週予告したとおり、HRL Laboratories(米カリフォルニア州)をとりあげます。ここは元Hughes Research Laboratoriesと言って、実業家のHoward Hughes (2023-01-30にHoward Hughes Medical Instituteで既出)が設立しました。

有名な業績として、Theodore Maimanによるルビーレーザー(1960)やWilliam Brigesによるアルゴンレーザー(1964)の発明があります。
現在の株主は、Raytheon（軍事、とくにミサイル）、GM(自動車)、Boeing（飛行機）などで、政府の受託研究もたくさんあるようです。
社員数はわかりませんが、87%が博士号を持っているとのこと。現在は5つの部門があるようです。
Intelligent Systems ここはcomplex networks, cyber-physical resilience, brain-machine intelligenceを得意としているようです。量子コンピュータの大規模化も研究しているようです。たくさん募集しています。 https://quantum.hrl.com/careers/
Materials & Microsystems 3D印刷はここです。
Microfabrication Technology ここはMBE, CVD, ALDなどの蒸着技術のほか微細加工も研究しているようです。
Sensors & Electronics THzや赤外を中心にやっているようです。
Vision Systems ここは軍と共同で暗視カメラなどを研究しているようです。
私にとってはおもちゃ箱のような内容で、じっくり見てみたいです。今週はこの研究所がやっていることを調べてみましょう。
