金曜日の”You are not listening”、今日は第3章です。”Listening to your curiosity – what we can learn from toddlers”
元CIAの主任尋問官(chief interrogator)の話から始まっています。読者を引き込むのがうまいです。聞く能力は科学というよりも芸術(rather art than science)で、尋問術というのはあるが、真実を語っているかはわからない。それより好奇心を高めて適切な質問をすることが重要である、と言っています。ジャーナリストとしての作者の経験では、インタビューが面白くなかったとしたら、それは質問の仕方が悪いためである、とのこと。どれも腑に落ちます。面白かったのは、「聞く技術」に関する研究は、学生の講義への理解度を使って定量的な研究がおこなわれているため、インタビューや日常会話での聞く技術には全然使えないということです。IKEAの創業者はお忍びで店舗を訪問し、客のふりをして店員に質問したり、店員のふりをして客と話したりしたが、大多数の人が何を考えているか知りたい好奇心からだったとのことです。日本では他人への好奇心が強すぎると「変な人」と思われてしまうので加減が必要ですが、深い会話には必要かもしれません。また、日本では「阿吽（あうん）の呼吸」など、言葉を介さないコミュニケーションも重視されていますね。話す相手の文化圏によって切り替えていく必要があるかもしれません。これは場数が必要でしょう。私も修行中です。
