今日の金曜日の読書は”You are not listening (Kate Murphy著）”という2年前のベストセラーの2回目、第1章 The lost art of listening です。現在では、聞く技術が失われていること、そのため人々が孤独に悩んでいること、著者がインタビューを仕事とするジャーナリストとして感じていることなどを綴っています。文章はリズムがあり、発想が豊かで、一貫した論理と流れがある一種の名文です。ベストセラーになったのも納得できます。作文のお手本によさそうです。
日本に関係する記述もありました。一つは、孤独をいやすためのビジネス（例えば成長した子供と仲たがいした母親のための息子役など）がある、とのことです。あまり一般的とは思えませんが、日本発のニュースとして配信されたことがあるのかもしれません。もうひとつは、英国首相の国会での答弁は歌舞伎の劇場(Kabuki theater)のセリフと同様にちゃんと聞かれていない、という失礼なたとえです。確かに、外国人が聞いても分からないとは思いますが…
ためになる言い回しを拾ってみようとしましたが、たくさんあるのでごく一部です。

“When I interview people, I often get the sense that they are unaccustomed to having someone listen to them.” いろいろな人をインタビューすると、他人にちゃんと聞かれることに慣れていないな、と感じることがしばしばある。
“Lonliness does not discriminate.” 孤独は人を差別しない。
the generation Z ゼット世代： 1995～2010頃に生まれた世代で、生まれたときからデジタル機器が存在していた。generation ○○はマーケティング用語でよく出てきます。
“The latest research indicates no major differences between men and women or between races when it comes to feeling disconnected. However, it does show that those in generation Z, are the most likely to feel lonely and self-report that they are in worse health than other generations.” 最新の研究によると、孤絶の感覚にはほとんど男女差・民族差がないが、Z世代は孤独を感じて不調を訴える率が他の世代よりも高い。
