今週から、金曜日はKate Murphy著 “You are not listening” (2020?)を読んでいこうと思います。
著者はフリーランスの記者(New York Timesのcontributoer)のようですが、経歴はよくわかりません。この本は新聞か雑誌の英語サイトの書評で見て面白そうだと思って買いました。
下記にweb siteがありますが、この本のことしか書いてありません。著者は科学的な要素を含むコラムで有名とのこと。

上記サイトにあるように、多くの言語(21か国語)に訳されています（日本語訳もありましたが、英語版を買ったので今回は買わないで済ませたいです）。17章＋序章＋結論です。英語のこの手の本一般に言えることですが、注・文献リストが充実していて、全体の2割くらいあります。これは根拠をきちんと示すということで、書く方はたいへんですが真似をしたらいいと思います。日本の本ではあまり見ませんが、出版社が削ってしまうのかもしれません。
序章は、聞くことの重要性を述べています。ちょっと抜粋すると：
“To really listen is to be moved physically, chemically, emotionally, and intellectually by another person’s narrative. / This is a book in praise of listing and lament that as a culture we seem to be losing our listening mojo. /…/ To write this book, I have spent the better part of two years delving into the academic research related to listening – the biomechanical and neurobiological processes as well as the psychological and emotional effects.”

eclectic エク「れ」クティック 折衷（せっちゅう）主義的な、取捨選択する level 11 DeepLだと「その折衷的で多くの人に共有される記事は・・・」 ちょっと変ですね。LDOCEだと
eclectic＝”including a mixture of many different things or people, especially so that you can use the best of all of them” → 「幅広い題材にわたり」でどうでしょうか。日本語にぴったりの対応がない単語です。
