今週のマキャベリは、第23章まで。君主が側近・大臣などを選ぶときの心得です。現代でもある程度の集団を率いるリーダーに有効な心得だと思います。君主をリーダーに読み替えます。
1.リーダーの能力は側近の力量を見ればわかる。側近が優秀な場合は、その力量を見抜いて抜擢している上に、従わせる力を備えているからである。
2.部下に悪だくみをさせないためには、名誉と金銭で報いるとともに自分も苦楽を共にすることにより、リーダーに仕える方が得であると理解させる。また、力に余る大役を与えて頑張らせると信頼関係が深まる。
※ 一代で大きくなった会社の後継者選びの問題が複数の会社でニュースになっていますね。会社は技術力と経営の力で戦っているようなものですから、軍事力と権謀術数で戦ったイタリアの都市国家の君主と似た話になるのは当然と言えるでしょう。
3.ブレインをうまく使うには、諮問されたことについては真実を語る自由を与え、気兼ねなしに答えることを歓迎するようにする。しかし、自分が決断したことはふらふら変えないという方針を維持し、ブレインにも心得させる。
ハプスブルグ家の神聖ローマ皇帝マクシミリアンI世(1459-1519)の例がひいてあります。事前に誰とも相談しないのに、確固とした自分の方針がなく、やり始めてから側近の意見でふらふらと考えを変えたためにことごとく失敗したとのことです。政略結婚で一時代を築いたのは事実なので、ちょっと辛口すぎのような気もしますが…
