昨日の研究所の名前に入っていた Antoine Jerone Balard バ「ら」ール(1802-1876)は、貧乏な家庭に生まれて Univ. Montpellierを卒業後、薬剤師・教師をしながら実験を続け、臭素と塩素の化学を切り開きました。出世作は、海藻抽出物からヨウ素を除くことによる臭素の発見です。臭素は美しい液体ですが、近づくと呼吸器に悪く、男性の不妊の原因になるとのことなので要注意です。Balardはこの業績でUniv. Sorbonneの教授になり、ハロゲンの研究の他に、同僚の研究室を回って議論して研究を助けたといわれています。PasteurはBalardの学生で、助手として雇われているときに酒石酸のキラリティを発見しました。生命の自然発生を否定した白鳥の首フラスコの実験はBalardのアイデアをPastuerの技術で実現したものだと言われています。
講義も先人の業績を生き生きと紹介して学生を引き付けたとあります。
大学教員として理想的な人物だと思います。
