噴火が起こったトンガは地理的にはポリネシアに属します。ハワイ(Hawaii)、ニュージーランド(New Zealand)、イースター島(Easter Island, Rapa Nui)を頂点とする三角形の内側だそうです。どうやって人類が南太平洋の島々に広がっていったのかは興味深く、考古学や言語学、遺伝子調査等を用いて研究が進んでいます。現在の説は、BC2500年頃台湾から南下していったとのこと。BC1100年ころにフィジーに到達し、その後BC950年ころにサモア、トンガに到達。さらに東に進み始めるのは紀元1世紀ころだそうです。
