今週の「武士道」は第２章 武士道の淵源(えんげん、Sources of Bushido)の最初から見ていきましょう。
In Japan there are several sources of Bushido of which I may begin with Buddhism. It furnished a sense of calm trust in Fate, a quiet submission to the inevitable, the stoic composure in sight of danger or calamity, that disdain of life and friendliness with death. A foremost teacher of swordsmanship, when he saw his pupil master the utmost of his art, told him, “Beyond this my instruction must give way to Zen teaching.” “Zen” is the Japanese equivalent for the Dhyana, which “represents human effort to reach through meditation zones of thought beyond the range of verbal expression.” Its method is contemplation, and its purport, as far as I understand it, to be convinced of a principle that underlies all phenomena, and, if it can, of the Absolute itself, and thus to put oneself in harmony with Absolute. Thus defined, the teaching was more than the dogma of a sect, and whoever attains to the perception of the Absolute raises himself above mundane things and awakes, “to a new Heaven and a new Earth.”

stoic ストイック これはカタカナでも使いますが、訳すならば 禁欲的な、冷静な （ストア学派から）
composure コン「ポウ」ジャ 沈着・平静 (level 10)

calamity カ「ら」ミティ 惨禍（さんか）、大きな不幸 (level 6)
disdain ディス「デ」イン ～を潔しとしない、軽蔑する、軽く見る (level 9)
foremost 主要な、真っ先の ここは、「剣術の一流の師の一人が、弟子が自分の技を極めたのを見たときに言ったことは、「ここより先は禅の教えにゆだねなければならない」」です。
Zen は、1960年代に日本の曹洞宗等が米国に僧侶を派遣して布教しました。この辺も最近本が出て面白い話がいろいろあるので、いずれ紹介します。ヒッピー運動(hippy, hippie movement)の一部と結びつき、Apple のSteve Jobsが傾倒したことが知られています。

purport 「パ」ーポート （不可算名詞）趣旨、意味（level 10） （動詞）主張する（実際はともかく）
Absolute 絶対 ですが、ここは「空（くう）」の訳か？
of the Absolute ここは、前の convinced of a principle that … の ofと並列です。
attain =gain, get 得る
perception パー「セ」プション 知覚
mundane 「マ」ンデイン ありふれた,平凡な,世俗的な (level 10)； ここは「空？を覚ることができれば、ありふれた物事を超越して新しい天地に目覚める」ということでしょう。
リズムのある名文です。作文に使える言い回しがたくさんあるので、音読して全部覚えてもいいと思います。が、全部をこのペースでやると300回＝週一で6年かかります。他にも紹介したい本がいろいろあるので、飛ばしながらいきます。(Bushido は対訳本が1300円くらい。Kindle版英語のみ241円です）
