今週の「武士道」は、先週にひきつづき、Courage, The Spirit of Daring and Bearing (第４章 勇気：敢為堅忍の精神）からです。戦闘時における余裕と、好敵手を大事にすることが勇気であると述べています。武士の実例では戦いの場面での連歌（上の句と下の句）のやりとりで、現代の感覚からすると「グロい」です。

“「このような時、どんなに命が惜しいだろう（←暗殺者が槍でついて上の句）。前もって元から存在しない自分と悟っていなかったならば（←太田道灌が下の句を言って絶命）」である。これは新渡戸稲造『武士道』（1899年）において、勇気ある真に偉大な人物が死に臨んで有する「余裕」の一例として紹介されている。”

「衣のたてはほころびにけり」＝「お前の本拠地である衣川城は陥落したぞ」 高校で習ったときはそういう意味とは認識していませんでした。

Antony and Octavius アントニウスとオクタビアヌス ローマの政治家。アントニウスはその後エジプトに派遣され妻がいるのにクレオパトラとつきあう。オクタビアヌスは初代ローマ皇帝。この辺の話は面白いです。
Brutus ブルータス オクタビアヌスの大叔父であるシーザーを暗殺、ここは、その後Brutusがアントニウス軍と闘って敗死した後の話です。
furnish him with plenty of salt 「敵に塩を送る」の故事ですが、下記によれば本当かどうかわからないそうです。

Camillus カミッルス(BC446-BC365) 初期のローマ市が外敵に攻められたとき、追い詰められた市民がお金を払って撤退させようとしたところ、外から救援に駆け付け、「ローマ人は金ではなく鉄（の剣）で戦う」と宣言して勝利した。

Nietzsche ニーチェ。知り合いのドイツ人によると、現代ドイツでは、ナチスの精神的背景とされて評価は高くないそうです。内容は合う合わないがあると思いますが、Zarathustraは文章がきれいだと思います。
“You are to be proud…” 自分の敵を誇りとすべし(are to=should)。そうすれば敵の成功は自分の成功となる。
