今週の孫子は、第３章 謀攻篇(Attack by stratagem) から有名な言葉「彼を知り己を知れば、百戦してあやうからず」です。箇条書きにすることで文章にリズムと力が出ているのがわかると思います（私が言う「ピリッとしている文章」）。これは言語にかかわらず使える文章法です。
「故知勝有五。知可以戦与不可以戦者勝。識衆寡之用者勝。上下同欲者勝。以虞待不虞者勝。将能而君不御者勝。此五者知勝之道也。
故曰、知彼知己者、百戦不殆。不知彼而知己、一勝一負。不知彼不知己、毎戦必殆。」
17.Thus we may know that there are five essentials for victory: (1) He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight. (2) He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces. (3) He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks. (4) He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared. (5) He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered by sovereign. 18. Hence the saying: If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

孫子の有名なフレーズ phrase はほぼ尽きたと思いますので、ここでいったんお休みにして、来週から金曜日は「Old Wine New Flasks: Reflections on Science and Jewish Tradition, by R. Hoffmann & S.L. Schmidt」から面白いところをしばらく紹介します。Hoffmannは、ウッドワード・ホフマン則で若くしてノーベル化学賞を受賞した理論家ですが、まだ現役の教授です。上記の本はユダヤの伝統と科学に関する往復書簡等から作られています。彼らが有名な科学者を輩出している秘密を知りたいですね。Hoffmannは詩人としても有名だそうで、論文に出てくる英単語も難しいです。
