さて、今週の世界の研究所は、ベルギーのimecです。電子工学（リソ、太陽電池、グラフェン、有機など次世代を狙う）・情報技術にかかわる先端技術をEUの中心の一つとして研究しています。所員は4000人、年間予算は535 million Euro（670億円）。数年前にASMLと共同でEUV技術の研究部門を作りました。名称がInteruniversity Microelectronics Centre であることからわかるように、大学とも共同しています。日本の産総研は年間予算1120億円、所員は3000人なので、対応していると言ってもいいですが、ベルギーの人口は1146万人で日本の約1/10です。東京にもオフィスがあるそうです。

ベルギー、オランダ、ルクセンブルクはベネルクス３国として地理で習うところですが、一人当たりのGDPは日本よりもずっと高いです。ベルギーはEUの機関にかかわるサービス業と石油化学、ルクセンブルクは金融・保険・不動産、オランダはサービス業と電気・医療機器（例：PHILLIPS）に加えて、先端技術や農業でも稼いでいます。
