IBM roboRXNでは、分子の記述にSMILES(simplified molecular-input line-entry system)という記法を使っています。これは、分子中の原子のつながり方を1次元の文字列で記述する方法で、1980年代に開発されました。現在、大部分はオープンソースですが（”RDKit”で探してみてください）、SMILESの考案者 David Weiningerに関しては追悼文が専門誌にあり、web公開されています。それによると、同氏は大学の人ではなく、会社→大学院で博士→自治体で環境中の化学物質の毒性を調べる→毒性データベースのためにSMILESを考案→仲間を誘って起業、のようです。大きな収益を上げるのは難しそうですが、この考案で自家用飛行機を３機所有し自宅に天体観測所と実験室を構築する程度には報われたようでよかったです。Daylightという関連会社が今もあります。
