ときどき鉱物の話をしましょう。今週はゼオライト（日本語では沸石）です。

作り方は、界面活性剤のミセルとSi, Alのアルコキシドを長時間寝かせてゾルゲルにして、焼き固めます。界面活性剤分子をうまく設計することで穴の大きさや形が変わります。長距離秩序を持つ結晶になるのは不思議ですが、数10μｍサイズの単結晶は作られています(1)。市販品は数種類しかなく、自分で合成しなければならない場合もあります。

最近、高温短時間の水熱合成が行われるようになっていますが(2)、どこまで一般的に使えるかはまだ研究途上です。液体を瞬間的に加熱して核形成を起こさせる方法はCdS等のナノ粒子(quantum dots)の合成にも使われますが、現在の量産手法は化学的に精密合成した分子クラスターを核として結晶成長させるものです(3)。quantum dots (QD)は有機発光体と違って封止が弱くても長寿命なので、有機ELと次世代ディスプレイの覇権を争っている状況です。この話もいずれしましょう。
