金曜日は英語の話題の（話題になりそうな）本を読むことにしています。今読んでいる”The Consciousness Instinct: Unraveling the Mystery of How the Brain Makes the Mind”の著者の講演がありました。この本の出版(紙版が2018、絶版で昨年電子版になっています)を機に行われた学会の基調講演のようです。
jokeを飛ばして受けていますね。話の組み立てもうまいです。
今週は第5章です。第4章で、脳はモジュールでできている、という結論でしたが、第５章ではモジュールが階層構造をなしている、という主張をしています。論拠はやや曖昧で、脳はBoeing 777のような複雑な機械なので階層構造になっているはず。どこかを改良したければ階層ごとに改良すればよいからだ、それが進化論からも技術論からも理にかなっている、と言っています。現在の半導体チップやinternetも ○○layerという言い方をするので、大きく見ると正しいでしょうね。しかし私のように細部が気になる人には階層の界面がどのくらいスパっと分かれているか、階層が入り混じっているところがないかどうかが興味深いです。このへんは脳と人工知能を比較しながら調べることになるでしょう。この本の先の方で説明はあるでしょうか？
英語は面白い表現を抜き出してみましょう。

protocol いくつか意味がありますが、 Cambridge dictionaryによると the system of rules and acceptable behaviour used at official ceremonies and occasions から派生していると思います。 公的儀式や機会において容認されるふるまいを定める一連の規則、で「一連の規則や手順」としてコンピュータ通信のプロトコル、生物化学実験のプロトコル、外交の「議定書」などの意味が出てきていると思います。この部分はどう訳しましょうか。「その階層のふるまいを定める一連の規則」を私の案としましょう。

insulated (and hence costly) 絶縁された（ゆえに高価な） ←絶縁のための脂肪層を作らないといけないのでエネルギー・栄養が必要という意味です。
