今週は、最近進展が報告された国際プロジェクト Human Cell Atlas（人体細胞地図）について調べます。

2018年に開始され、資金源はMeta社（旧Facebook）のZackerbergと妻のChanの財団 Chan Zackerberg Initiative が太いところです。
多くの人(現時点で9000人)から細胞の提供を受け、全世界の1700機関の3000人の研究者が協力して人体の各組織の細胞で発現している遺伝子のデータベースを作っています。正常な状態のデータを解析することで、 いろいろな疾病(しっぺい）や老化で起こる変化をとらえ治療に役立てることができるでしょう。人体には60兆の細胞があります。特に重要なのは、個人を他と区別する中心的構造である脳神経系と免疫系で、人工臓器ができるようになってもこれらの劣化が寿命を決めると思われます。永遠の寿命を得ることが個人にとって幸せだとは思いませんが、誰でも飽きるまで生きられるようにするのは、個人に関する限り、福祉の究極の目標と言っていいと思います。人体の細胞レベルの解析はそのために有効な一歩でしょう。人間というものを深く知る、という意味で哲学への回答とも言えるでしょうが、あまりに複雑で、そのまま人間に理解できる形の構造にはならないでしょう。一部を切り出して人間に理解できる物語に変える「翻訳者」が多数生まれると思われます。自分で研究するのは大変だと思いますが、解説を読むのが楽しみな分野になるでしょう。AIの本格的導入が進む最初の研究領域になるかもしれません。
