今週の話は短いRNA分子によるタンパク質合成過程の制御に関するもので、「RNA干渉 RNAi」の一種です。RNA干渉を起こす短いRNAにはmiRNAのほかに、siRNAというのがあります。miRNAがmRNA（メッセンジャーRNA）の相補配列と完全には一致しないため結合の強さや相手に「あいまいさ」が存在するのに対し、siRNAは完全に相補的なため、特定のmRNAと一対一に対応し強く結合します。それを見つけた酵素によってRNA誘導サイレンシング複合体(RNA-induced silencing complex, RISC)が形成され、最後には切断・分解されてmRNAが失われます。一方、miRNAの場合はRISCは形成されますが、タンパク質合成を阻害したり遅くしたりするだけで、分解されないこともあるそうです。

対象との対応にあいまいさがあること、結合が弱いのでmRNAの分解＝対応するタンパク質合成をストップするのではなく遅らせること、など制御系に複雑さを持ち込み、いわばアナログな制御を行うところが面白いですね。1種類のmiRNAの相手となるmRNAは100種類程度だそうです。それぞれにアナログの相互作用の強さの値がついているわけですね。気が遠くなるような複雑さです。生命の偉大さを感じます。老化はこの辺のネットワークを不調にするでしょうから、外部から補おうとすると微量の21～25塩基のRNAを分析し適切に応答し続ける装置を作ることになるでしょうか。どう作るか、ちょっと興味があります。細胞を若返らせる方が簡単かもしれません（これもまだできていませんが）。
ちなみに、RISCはコンピュータ用語ではCPUの設計の話に出てくる reduced instruction set computer です。ややこしいですね。

generation Z Ｚ世代 1995年前後以降＋2000年代に生まれた世代。スマホの登場に対応した最初の世代。その次2010年代生まれはgeneration αというようですが、定着していません。
