金曜日の読書”Hillbilly Elegy”は第10章、高校を卒業して海兵隊に入り4年間を過ごすところです。筆者は大学に行こうとしていましたが、高額の授業料をローンで賄うことに悩んでいました。海兵隊OGであるいとこの女性に薦められて海兵隊に行くことになります。すぐ13週間のブートキャンプが始まり、社会について何も知らないことを前提とした丁寧な授業と、厳しい肉体訓練、そして自制心を鍛錬するための上官のいじめ（食堂で食べようとしたケーキを叩き落されて掃除させられた）があります。朝5時に起床し起きている間はずっと監視され規律を保たねばならない生活です。現代の日本ではそういう「しごき」はほとんどなくなっていますが、「常に全力を尽くさせる」「必要な指導は懇切に行う」「肉体を極限まで鍛える（片手で10mロープを昇ることができるようになる）」など、適性が合致すれば高い教育効果を示しそうなプログラムです。元麻薬の売人なども立派に更生しているエピソードが載っています。祖母をはじめとする家族から毎週来る手紙の中身が紹介されていてほろっとします。4年間の間にはイラク戦争の戦場や貧しいハイチに派遣されたりして、自分が貧乏だと思っていたが如何に恵まれていたかに気づきます。筆者には海兵隊はとてもあっていたのだと思います。海兵隊にいる時に祖母は亡くなりますが、死に目には会えています。４年で除隊して、衣食住が支給されるために貯まった給料等を使って地元のオハイオ州立大学に行くことになります。
なかなか軍隊の内部の用語は見ませんが、ニュース等で出てくるので少しは覚えましょう。

quiteは反語的にも使います。「ここでは食事が終わってまだ空腹でなければ消化不良に悩むことになる（どちらも同じ感触）」くらいでしょうか？

mistrust your own individuality 自分の個性を殺す くらいでしょうか。 mistrustは「信用しない」= be suspicious of; have no confidence in.

learned helplessness は心理学用語で、学習性無力感。 その反対を海兵隊は教えてくれた、という意味です。
