今週は、データベースの標準として使われているSQLを解説したいと思います。

SQLとして使われているソフトは4～5種類くらいありますが、IBMの研究者Edgar F. Codd博士による数学の集合論を使ったデータ処理システムの提案を受けてD.D.Chamberlin博士とR.F. Boyce博士がIBM Yorktown Hightsの研究所で開発しました。この研究所は今はThomas J. Watson Research Centerと呼ばれています。この研究所はまだ取り上げていませんでした。江崎玲於奈博士が勤務していたことで知られています。

T.J.WatsonはIBMの初代社長で、42年間社長をしており、生前は世界一の富豪だったそうです（今でいうBill Gatesの立場でしょうか）。

「今日の英語」は今日で996回目となり、1000回になったら過去の500回くらいを一般公開しようと考えていました（絶対に間に合わなくなってしまいましたが）。
webページを作る時によく使われるWord Press（シェア43%とのこと）がSQLを使っているので、手持ちのデータを自動で移植するソフトを書こうとしています。そのため日曜プログラマーとしてしばらく日曜日にSQLを勉強していた次第です。
SQLはプログラミング言語として見るとかなり変わっていて、使いやすい印象ではありません。なぜこれが生き残っているのか、他のデータを扱うソフトとの連携の方法、哲学や量子計算機との関連（？）などを非専門家の立場から解説していきたいと思います。

indignant イン「ディ」グナント level 5 不正や卑劣に憤激しているようすを表す形容詞。 憤慨した、腹を立てた ※日本語にはズバリそのものを指す言葉はなさそうです。不公正(unfairness)を嫌う文化ということでしょうか。面白いですね。

初期は会計のレジや事務機器の会社で、Watsonが「コンピューターなんて世界に５台しか売れないだろう」と言ったと言われていますが、それはHartree-Fock近似で知られているHartreeが実際に「微分解析器」を作らせて使って言った、
「特殊な計算機で用途は3台あれば十分だろうし、高すぎて買えないだろう」が元ではないかとのことです。Hartreeはe^4m^2/(4ε0^2h^2)=27.2112eVのエネルギーを表す単位になっています。
