放射性同位体の応用として変わったところでは、10Be (半減期1.51(6)x 10^6 年)が地磁気の逆転現象の証拠の一つになるようです。Beは安定同位体が中性子数が奇数の9Beしかない変わった原子核で、10Beは宇宙線の影響でわずかに作られ続けています。

地磁気の逆転現象が起こる時には地球の磁場が弱くなり宇宙線がたくさん降り注ぐため、その時に地上で作られた岩石中の10Beが増え、地層の解析や他の同位体法で年代決定をすれば、地磁気の逆転の年代がわかるという仕組みです。鉱物中の強磁性体の磁化の向きも冷えるときにCurie点以下になったときの外部磁場が固定されますが、岩石は後で向きが変わる可能性もあるので10Be濃度が使われます。

下記によれば、最近の磁場逆転である78.1万年前の「チバニアン」は認定までゴシップネタになるような話でいろいろ大変だったようです。認められてよかったですね。
