遺伝子組み換え作物は除草剤と組で使うことが多いそうです。除草剤に耐性があるように遺伝子を組み替えます。対応する除草剤は、グリホサート系（glyphosate)（商品名ラウンドアップ）です。1970年に開発されてからもう50年過ぎています。最近、雑草に耐性種が現れ始めているとのことで、かなり時間がかかっていますね。

遺伝子組み換え品は綿、大豆、トウモロコシ、アルファルファ等が広範に栽培されているとのこと。スリランカの作物とは無縁のようです。
阻害するのは細菌と植物にしかない「シキミ酸経路」とのことで、芳香族アミノ酸の合成ができなくなるとのことです。もともと人間はこれらを作れないので、毒性がなさそうなのは納得です。
関係ないですが、シキミ酸(shikimate)は、3,4,5-トリヒドロキシ-1-シクロヘキセン-1-カルボン酸で、タミフルの原料。寺や墓地にある植物のシキミ（樒）からとれるそうです。名前からして、日本で発見されたのかなと思いましたが、シキミを分析して発見したのはEijkmanと言う人だそうです。。
