SRI Internationalが発明したZylonは、鉄よりも強い引っ張り強度を持つ合成繊維です。
そのmarcketing rights (商業化権）は
SRI International → Dow Chemical → 東洋紡 と移りました（いくらで買ったのでしょうね）。
1998年に防弾チョッキとして販売されましたが、2003年にそれをつけていた警官が撃たれて死亡したため、その劣化が明らかになりました。劣化を調べた修士論文（Texas A&M Univ. 2006年, pdfファイル）が下記です。

Zylon (poly-p-oheylene benzobisxazole, PBO)の合成法は4,6-diamino-1,3-benzenediol dihydrochlorideをテレフタル酸と縮合するという方法です(p13, Fig.2)。Kevlerと同様に液晶状態から合成するため、分子がそろって強くなります。
湿気によって分子の集合が緩くなる、oxazole ringが加水分解する、光励起によって加水分解が促進される、ということで、保存環境が重要のようです。(Walsh et al. J. Appl. Polymer Sci. 102, 351703525(2006))
